Abstract

Symptomatic leiomyomata of the uterus (Fibroids) represent a major health problem in premopausal women and are the leading indication for hysterectomy in Germany. Uterine artery embolisation (UAE) has emerged as a uterine-sparing treatment alternative for women wishing to retain their uterus. A high clinical success rate of UAE to control fibroid related symptoms and improve quality-of-life as well as a low complication rate has been reported in the literature over the last 10 years. This article provides an overview on UAE for uterine fibroids.
